Just about to burn...Young Male Vermilion Flycatcher

There were more Vermilion Flycatchers  at Estero Llano Grande State Park than I have ever seen in one place before. The full adult males are one of hardest birds to capture on digital medium since the red/orange almost always saturates the sensor to the point where all detail is lost. Very tricky. This young male, however, is well within range, especially as posed here on a branch tip under the partial shade of a tree.  The gray tones of the tree and the out of focus greens just add to the overall composition.

Zeiss PhotoScope 85FL at about 40x (1600mm equivalent field of view). 1/500th at ISO 100. Metered at about f5.0.

Very little processing in Lightroom. Added Clarity and Sharpen Landscapes preset.

From Zeiss PhotoScope 85FL.

    Hi Joe,

It is not attached to anything. The camera (7mp) is built into the scope. Unless you mean my tripod, which is a Manfrotto 190 CF leg set and a 701RCII head.

Nice shot, Steve. Would you mind including an approximate distance from you to your subjects. Even a really rough guess would help me. (If the data you’re already provide suggests the distance, I’m failing to calculate it.) Thanks. peace, mjh

    Steve,

If the camera is built into the scope how does one use the scope for just birding? Does the viewfinder of the camera provide the only view of the bird? Can’t imagine that this would be as pretty as a traditional scope view but that is an uneducated guess on my part.

    Sincerely,

    William Leigh

    Hi William,

follow this link to see how the scope looks and works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhhIGALu3qg or visit this page: http://www.zeiss.com/photoscope. As you will see, the scope works as a 15-45x spotting scope, with excellent views, and as a 7mp camera…at the same time.

The Vermilion was about 25-30 feet away.

Perfect shot in all respects. Did you do anything to the background green to make it so uniform? Out of focus greenery usually gives a mottled green background.
