9/22/2010: Egret Backlight

This will be both a Pic of the Day and a Wings on Wednesday…

I was out doing some pics and video of the new ZEISS Vario D 20-75x zoom eyepiece to add to my DiaScope Intro video (work), when this Great Egret flew in relatively close and posed (well, actually, preened). The lighting was a challenge, but, to my eye, quite beautiful. I took lots of exposures at various settings of both camera and scope.

I was experimenting with a new focus mode on the Canon SD4000IS I use for digiscoping (taking an image through the eyepiece of a spotting scope with a digital camera), and the Egret provided lots of practice. With the SD4000IS set on infinity focus, the camera still gives focus confirmation, even at distances less than infinite, as long as you manually focus. This seems to work quite well on the Canon, and is a pretty natural way of working with the spotting scope.

Since I intended to use the pics in a video, I was also using the wide image setting to match the 16/9 format. I quite like the result.

Canon SD4000IS through the new Vario eyepiece on the ZEISS DiaScope 85FL  for the equivalent field of view of a 4000mm lens. 1/320th at ISO 125. Programmed auto. Scope limited aperture at about f8.7.

Added Fill Light in Lighroom. Blackpoint right, added Clarity and just a hint of Vibrance. Color adjusted by eye. Blue shadows selectively desaturated.
